In 2001, Satchithananthan Chelliah had the idea to start a small family takeaway in the heart of Hobart, Tasmania. He had the inspiration to name it Little India after a small enclave in his hometown in Georgetown, Penang which is vibrant with traders and restaurants from the predominantly Tamil Nadu State in India.
Over 19 years later, Little India has become a pillar of the community, as one of the most popular Indian Takeaways, offering quick, affordable and family friendly meals in Hobart. It maintains its position as a one stop curry station for those who want to try the variety of Indian food without the restaurant price tag.
It is still operated by the same family since its inception and a popular destination for office workers and city shoppers alike. All raw materials are sourced from local farmers and suppliers as much as possible, to support the local businesses and give back to the society it calls home. Halal, meat eater, vegetarian or vegan; no matter what your preference, Little India has a meal for you.
